The SMEG Group – Over 135 Years of Commitment

As the historic energy operator of the Principality of Monaco, the SMEG Group is one of the few fully integrated energy companies covering the entire energy value chain—from production to distribution, including associated services and infrastructures. SMEG is an energy infrastructure and services operator responsible for the distribution and supply of electricity and gas, as well as the operation and maintenance of public lighting in the Principality of Monaco.

For more than 40 years, SMEG has been designing, building and operating district heating and cooling plants using local, renewable and recovered energy sources, including energy recovery from household waste and marine geothermal energy. SMEG puts its expertise and know-how as an energy provider at the service of the energy transition by offering its customers turnkey solutions that are financed and tailored to their individual needs and uses.

As a century-old company, SMEG has experienced significant growth in France in recent years, driven by a strategy of external growth and structural investments. It is now one of the leading electric vehicle charging networks in Europe and continues to deploy assets in the field of renewable energies.

The Group is actively investing in solar and wind power, developing agrivoltaic projects and carrying out operations to rehabilitate landfills or non-buildable land into photovoltaic power plants. A pilot project of this type is due to be inaugurated in Mâcon. In France, the Group has already exceeded 169 MW of operational assets, based on a diversified portfolio of solar and wind installations spread across several regions.

This development has been supported by a €21 million refinancing of three assets, carried out via the MER structure, reflecting the Group’s ambition to become a key player in the energy transition across France.

At the same time, the SMEG Group is deploying its technological expertise to develop innovative solutions for emerging energy uses. Its EVzen brand is dedicated to electric mobility solutions for individuals and businesses. The Smart+ service offers energy optimization solutions for local authorities and the tertiary sector, combining advanced technologies with energy usage analysis. The Group is also developing self-consumption solutions for local authorities and landowners, as well as high-performance urban heating and cooling networks such as SeaWergie, Monaco’s pioneering thalassothermal network, which was the subject of a state visit by the President of the French Republic in June 2025.

With its strong position as a provider of low-carbon energy solutions and its prospects for sustained growth, the SMEG Group supports local authorities in their transition towards more sustainable and resilient energy systems.

SMEG is led by Thomas Battaglione, Chief Executive Officer of SMEG and Deputy Chairman of SMA. The Group relies on multidisciplinary teams and on its subsidiary SMA for certain operational activities. The Group as a whole employs more than 550 people. SMEG is ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 certified.

In 2025, SMEG inaugurated its new headquarters in Fontvieille, known as the ‘SMEG Building’. Rising ten storeys high and covering an area of approximately 12,000 m², the building houses the company’s teams, private tenants and several government departments. The inauguration, presided over by SAS Prince Albert II and SAS Princess Charlène, was part of SMEG’s 135th anniversary and marks an important milestone in the company’s history.

The new headquarters illustrate the Group’s ongoing evolution towards energy models that integrate technological innovation, environmental performance and adaptation to contemporary urban challenges.

  • The main shareholder, with 64% of the capital, is ENGIE through its Energy Services division. ENGIE is one of the world's leading energy companies, active across the entire energy chain, in electricity and natural gas, from upstream to downstream.
SMEG, today's Network Division, with the contribution of its subsidiary and its shareholdings, contributes to these good performances and constitutes, in a limited geographical area, a real showcase for the Group's businesses.
  • The Monegasque State owns 20% of SMEG's capital. It grants SMEG a concession for its activities and monitors its implementation. Under the leadership of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Government of Monaco is firmly committed to Sustainable Development. This is also one of the main thrusts of the new concession that came into force in 2009.
  • The EDEV holding company, in which EDF holds a 15% stake, is at the heart of the Development branch created in 2002 by EDF, and its purpose is to stimulate the creation of new commercial products and services in order to foreshadow the Group of tomorrow.
